Twelve Hour Race

Brand new location for 2018! The 12 hour Adrenaline Rush Adventure Race is
a great race for those who are looking to challenge themselves by going a little longer and a little further. Teams will trek, bike, paddle and navigate their way across a 55–60 mile course in and outside the park.

The Adrenaline Rush is part of the USARA series. An additional $8 race day fee (or proof of USARA membership) is required by USARA and can be paid on race day at check-in. Cash or checks only. 

BOAT UPDATE: Canoes and kayaks will be provided. Teams will not be allowed to bring their own boats, but can use their own paddles and PFDs. Paddles and PFDs will be provided to teams that do not bring them.



Date: Saturday, June 16, 2018


Location: James River State Park


Duration: Teams and soloists will have 12 hours to complete the full course and reach the finish line


Solo (Male and Female)

Two-Person (Male, Female, and Coed)

Three-Person (Male, Female, and Coed)

Four-Person (Male, Female, and Coed)

Minimum race age is 9 years old (racing with a parent or guardian)



Saturday, June 16


6:00am to 8:00am: Check-in (waivers, maps, rules of travel, and swag given out)

8:00am: Mandatory Race Brief 

9:00am: 12 Hour Race Start

9:00pm: 12 Hour Race Finish

9:30pm: 12 Hour Race Awards

DISCIPLINES (55-60 miles total distance for full course)


Trekking/trail running, bushwhacking (off-trail travel) 

Mountain biking on single track, and double track trails, pavement and fire roads.  (hybrids are allowed but we highly recommend a mountain bike) Cross and road bikes are not permitted.


Paddling in canoes for team, and kayaks for soloists, on the beautiful and historic James River (river paddling with some Class 1 ripples)  

Full on navigation with map and compass/orienteering. Teams may be required to plot UTMS’s



This park is in a remote part of Virginia. It does, on the other hand, have excellent camping facilities.  We highly recommend lining up lodging as soon as you register.

Regular registration: 

$150 per person (Monday 4/16 - Sunday 6/3 at 11:59 pm)


Late registration 

$170 per person  (Monday 6/4 - Wednesday 6/13 at 11:59 pm)

Registration closes June 13th. Due to race logistics there will be no race day registration.

Mandatory Gear for Each Racer

Rain jacket

Backpack and a way to carry water (e.g., camelbak, water bottles, etc.)

Food and water for the race

Space blanket
   (We recommend the SOL Space Blanket)



   (Mountain bikes – no cyclocross bikes allowed

Bike helmet

Bike lights (red blinky light for rear and white for front…headlamp is ok)

Paddling Gear

Canoes and kayaks will be provided. Teams are not allowed to bring their own boats (due to logistics). Teams may bring their own paddles and PFDs.


Recommended Gear

Waterproof map case (this can be as simple as zip lock(s) and duct tape or a store bought case)

Appropriate clothing for the weather that day


Mandatory Gear for Each Team


Bike tool, spare tube(s), pump or CO2

Basic medical kit (We recommend the Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight 3):

Duct tape

Pain/fever medication (Ibuprofen/Tylenol)

ACE Bandage

Gauze pads or small roll of gauze


Race map (provided at check-in)

Race rules of travel (provided at check-in)

Race passport (provided at check-in)


Cell phone (fully charged)

Small dry bag for the safe-keeping of your cell phone. These
     bag(s) MUST BE WATERPROOF. It is to your benefit to make
     sure you have the best waterproofing system you can find.
